Across the Line by Amy Lee Burgess {Guest Post & Giveaway}

When Councilor Allerton sends Stanzie to investigate a territory dispute between tiny pack Stony Fell and the British branch of much larger Mac Tire, it seems routine until someone sets a bear trap. A young Stony Fell man pays with the loss of his leg and now it’s up to Stanzie and Murphy to figure out who set the trap–and why–before more members of the packs are maimed.

Add a pair of star-crossed lovers, one love triangle, a grief-stricken bond mate with jealousy issues, and bad blood all around and the resultant twisted hell brew reveals the darker side of inter-pack politics that could prove too difficult–and dangerous–for even Stanzie to untangle.

The Book Excerpt

acrosstheline333x500-199x300We didn’t get three feet through the apartment door before he had me on the floor, tearing at my clothes. I ripped at his too. He kicked the door shut with his foot while simultaneously tearing at my clothes.

I sank my teeth into his shoulder and he yanked my hair hard.

“Are we playing rough?” he asked me.

For an answer, I head butted him. “That’s for being a giant asshole.”

We rolled over and over, smashed into the coffee table and knocked the lamp in the corner over. The crash of the bulb shattering was loud as hell.

“We’re not rolling around in glass.” Murphy lifted me up and I locked my legs around his waist. He staggered us over to one of the sofas.

We crashed down and the springs gave a protesting wail.

I scratched his back with my nails and he bit my lip until we both tasted my blood. It smeared across our faces as we kissed and he shifted so I straddled him on my knees as he sat upright.

“I love you,” he said as he tongued my earlobe. He sucked on it, sending a shooting burst of pleasure through my body.

“I love you,” I told him. When he lifted his head, his eyes gleamed with tears he blinked away.

“Say it again,” he begged. “Tell me again.”

“I love you.” I cupped his face with my hands. Beneath my fingers, his cheeks were smooth and warm. When his wolf colored his eyes amber, my wolf reached for his through me.

He pulled me down so he could kiss me and our lovemaking turned slow and gentle. His touch was reverent and lingering, his kisses a drug that pulled me into him, so my heart beat in time with his.

He brushed his lips, feather light, across my bruised jaw and bleeding lip, whispered to me in Irish as we moved together in a slowly building rhythm.

A rush of energy, my soul to his, and I buried my face in his sticky warm throat. God, I loved this infuriating man.

The Guest Post

Paranormal Creatures as Outsiders

Most paranormal creatures are outsiders looking in or back to their own human days. They exist on the fringes and have to fight for what they have in order to keep it. It doesn’t hurt that they are normally incredibly gorgeous and strong. Gifts that they must use to their advantage, but generally they aren’t enough to let them back in. Presuming they were ever there to begin with.

The shifters in the Wolf Within Series have been outsiders for centuries. They are all taught as children that at one point in history Others (non-shifters) knew about them. Even then they were second class citizens. Jealous or scared of what they didn’t understand, the Others turned on the Great Pack.

In order to kill them, they had to find them in wolf form and it didn’t matter after a while if the slaughtered wolf was a shifter or merely a plain wolf. They all had to be eradicated. This accounts for the annihilation of the wolves in Ireland and other parts of the world.

The instinctive hatred of wolves is all that still exists in the memory of the Others. All knowledge about the Great Pack has been erased over time.

In Stanzie’s world, the ranchers in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming aren’t lobbying to kill wolves so much because they kill livestock, but out of deep rooted, instinctive hatred of wolves. Because once Others knew the Great Pack existed

Most Pack children are homeschooled and kept away from interacting with Others until they are at least in their teens. Others are beings to avoid and distrust. Once grown, a Pack member has to pass like a shadow through the world of the Others. This usually means jobs in restaurants, construction, retail or other low paying jobs. The only Pack members who go to college are those destined to be doctors or lawyers who will then donate their services back to their packs. They are chosen very carefully.

Before the industrial revolution, the playing field between Others and the Great Pack was more level, but now they have been forced to the fringes and some of them have become resentful.

The Great Pack is superior, they argue. Members stay young for decades, live longer, are healthier and are every bit as smart as anyone walking the planet. Why should they be content in their little corners when they could walk free in the world?

But not everyone in the Great Pack believes such a radical move is a good idea. Stepping out of the shadows would be the death of them. It would start the cycle of slaughter once again. We don’t have the numbers to fight, they insist. Others exist in the billions. The Great Pack numbers only in the very low millions spread out over the world.

The Wolf Within series addresses this issue of the outsider. Will the ones who want back inside prevail? Or will it be those who favor the shadows and outsider status?
