The Circle: Blood Gift by Amy Lee Burgess - Character Interview & Giveaway

Tour Banner - Blood Gift
When Claire became a vampire, she hoped she could forget her abusive past. But her mentor, the sexy, perfect Parker destroys her dreams of a new start. Soon, Claire devotes her new found psychic powers to helping abused women.

Drawn to the mysterious and handsome Andre, another master in the London Circle and Parker’s archrival, Claire enters into a passionate clandestine affair which causes her powers to ramp out of control. Wild, sensual sex morphs into something deeper and, for Claire, terrifying. Andre soon discovers her abilities and realizes he is her trigger–the one vampire in the world who can help her control her spiraling powers.

Bonding with him requires Claire to trust and accept his love, two things she cannot bring herself to do. The gift of love is something her past won’t allow her to accept. Even so, Andre will have to reach her in time to save her life or stake her when her powers drive her insane.

The Circle - Blood Gift Cover

“Claire.” Andre’s voice was heavy with desire. The way he said my name with his slight Irish accent was different from the way everyone else said it. I felt special. Different. As if I mattered.

I turned my head to look at him. He had me pinned to the grass, one hand on either side of my shoulders. I’d locked my ankles so my heels pressed into the small of his back. His eyes were smoldering dark, and my lips parted.

That was all the invitation he needed. The burning shock of his mouth against mine was electric, and I brought my hands up so I could bury my fingers in his soft hair. I had just enough presence of mind to weave a shield of privacy so that mortals didn’t register we were there and avoided walking near.

Andre and I connected like interlocking pieces of a vast puzzle. Our kiss went supernova hot in an instant. I curled my tongue around his, and the whole world froze. Mortals were nearby, but their thoughts abruptly cut out of my head. For all I was aware, Andre and I were the only two beings on earth .

The explosive taste of his blood made me moan. He’d deliberately nicked his tongue on his fang. My own fangs burst from my gums, and I scraped my tongue against one of them. Blood spurted, and it was Andre’s turn to groan. The cold grass beneath my body seemed to disappear as if I floated weightless with only Andre’s kiss to anchor me. Time sputtered and died, and nothing mattered but his hot mouth moving against mine.

“Claire,” Andre said again through the blood in his mouth.

Four golden weeks I’d waited for him to kiss me, and now he was, and it was glorious.

“I’m going to make love to you in the grass if we don’t stop.” He increased the pressure of his lips against the hollow of my throat. “Come home with me, angel.”

“Dre,” I whispered, shaking with fear and desire—I wasn’t sure which was stronger. On fire for him, I didn’t want him to stop touching me. While his body was pressed to mine, we had all the time in the world, but when he moved away, would everything crash? “I’m scared.”

“Of me?” He lifted his head so he could look into my eyes. The night around us was alive with the sound of crickets. Stars wheeled in the sky, and the earth pressed against my back. I was suspended in the universe. Nothing mattered but him.

I touched his cheek with the tip of my finger, traced a line to his sensual mouth. I wanted to kiss him and taste my blood mingled with his. “Of everything. Of this not being real. That this is all a lie like Parker says. That I don’t matter. That nothing matters. That this is a race to see who can hurt the other first.”

He winced as if in pain, and I buried my face in his shoulder. He pulled me tightly into his embrace and rested his forehead against my head. “I won’t hurt you. I swear I won’t.”

Interview with Andre

Amy - Tell us about yourself.

Andre - My name is Andre and I know this will sound theatrical, but it’s true. I’m a vampire. I have never killed a mortal. We don’t do that. Blood is essential, of course, but there are ways around that.

Amy - You mean like seducing your victims?

Andre - Sure, that’s one way to do it.

Amy - You say that like it’s not your preferred method.

Andre - Because it’s not. That’s all I’m going to say about that though.

Amy - Fair enough. Tell me about your world. Who you live with. Who you love. Who you hate. Who you admire.

Andre - I live in London. Knightsbridge to be exact. I live with my apprentice, Claire. I’m also wildly and irrevocably in love with her. I don’t hate anyone. I haven’t hated anyone since my master, Devlin, was staked. I admire lots of people. Soldiers. Military strategists in general. Authors who write spy thrillers. Robert Ludlum for example. The British royal family – well, most of them. The doorman of my building. He’s *always* on duty. I’ve never seen him take one night off in the seven years I’ve lived in this flat. I greatly admire my Circle Master, Oliver. I envy his poise and his clarity.

Amy - When were you Turned?

Andre - Dublin, 1947. I was twenty-nine years old and I met this very intriguing man. I happened by him standing on a street corner performing stage magic. This was very odd considering it was after midnight. I was rather drunk and I stopped to watch. He did amazing things with coins and other small objects. He managed to pick my pocket as I stood there gawking and I didn’t even realize it until the next evening just after dark when someone knocked on my door. I’d spent the day viciously hung over and was in no mood for company, but I thought it might be my girlfriend. She’d given me the heave the day before which was why I’d been so prodigiously drunk the night before.

It wasn’t her. It was the magician from the street corner. He flashed my wallet and instead of decking him, I invited him in. It was his smile that hooked me. He really was an incredibly winsome man. He could charm the birds out of the trees and the stars from the sky. But nothing was ever enough for him.

He seduced me that night. I’d never been with a man before, but he was irresistible. He bit me during sex and drank my blood. The next thing I knew I was drinking his and so I was Turned.

Amy - So it was a love/hate relationship?

Andre - Yeah. Definitely. I never loved him, but by the end I hated him so very much. And I’m very sure he hated me as well. But then he hated everyone. No one could ever live up to his expectations.

Amy - How did you get into the London Circle if you were Turned in Dublin?

Andre - Devlin managed to convince Sinead, the Dublin Circle Master, to trade us to Oliver’s Circle. That didn’t happen until the late sixties. He gave me enough time with the Dublin vampires to form alliances and friendships and then ripped them all out from under me so I would only have him. I guess he didn’t count on me making friends in London, but I did.

Amy - You sound grim as if that was a bad thing.

Andre - It was for them. Devlin made sure to punish the ones I was closest with.

Amy - How long have you been Claire’s master?

Andre - About two months. Not long. She was Parker’s apprentice to start with. She’s been Turned nearly four years.

Amy - When did you fall in love with her?

Andre - On the rooftops of London. Rather in the space between one roof and the next. I taught her how to use her vampiric reflexes. How to run and jump and climb. For three years she’d been a timid creature really. Quiet, self-contained. She wouldn’t respond to my overtures because she was afraid of what Parker would think. But when I got her to myself and showed her the night as I knew it, she was a different person. She’d leap out into space with such fearless abandon. I watched her soaring across an alley one night, sixty feet up in the air, and the exhilaration on her face, her smile of indescribable joy sparked something inside me. My infatuation turned to love in an instant. And it’s been that way for me ever since. I want her to live in joy every moment, as much as she can. Because she comes alive when she’s happy.

Amy - I wish you both the best. Thank you, Andre, for sharing with us today. Your world sounds fascinating. And so does Claire.

Andre - You have no idea!
